They denied my request for a glitter portrait of Dick Clark so I settled on the ball dropping in Times Square.
See you in 2012.

The confetti and streamers from New Year’s Eve have since been cleaned up, but the disco nail lives on.
I’ve begun to accept that there is no elegant way to photograph your own nails. Anyone’s nails, for that matter.
I’ve abandoned Big Apple Red for the time being in favor of midnight blue with some errant glitter streaks (and sadly no disco thumbs). Last round got a little wild so I’m trying to tone it down a bit. This is growing up.
I’m still sticking with my Big Apple Red for now but settled on a “reverse French” with hot pink in the half-moons and glitter on the thumbs. Also, my nail army grew one stronger with the last visit.
New nails. I went in without a plan in mind except that I wanted to stick with Big Apple Red. The stripes are navy and the thumbs are navy glitter. But oh how badly did I want to get a tiny white bow-tie on my pinky! I know that is a line I must not cross though, because there is no turning back when I open that floodgate of tackiness.
Also, I bought a new book.
New nail design. Big Apple Red with a rhinestone on each finger, silver glitter on the thumbs. I wore this shade nearly non-stop for the last year and it is a pleasant one to come back to. Lest you think these things are tacky, I promise you’d come out of Marie Nails with no fewer embellishments were you in my shoes, or even your own shoes, in the company of the friendly “nail artists.” The other girl getting her nails done had a reverse French manicure with clear half moons, a red nail plate, and blue glitter tips. But it was not garish! I very nearly requested a blue glitter heart or star on the pinky to celebrate USA, but I held back (I knew the Tumblr community would appreciate a more understated look).
New nail scheme. Merlot base with rose glitter gradient, purple-to-pink glitter gradient on thumbs. While I was in the chair, visions of New Year’s Eve 2011 danced through my head (every nail will be rainbow glitter). But then later I almost had drive-thru Checkers for dinner, so really I’m not that fancy.
Rarely am I so roused as to write a Yelp review, but I may dust off my once-used login* to sing the praises of Marie Nails in Soho. I went earlier tonight to get Calgels, which is the bridge between acrylic and natural nails. I thought I was throwing a curveball at the nail lady when I requested a subtle gradient and disco thumbs, but she could have done this in her sleep.
Ladies: it dries to completion under UV light in 1 minute flat and typically lasts 2-3 weeks. You must go.
